    • The 2014 Alaska Dietetic Association Spring Conference proved to be a success this week. This was a wonderful time for dietitians across the state to come together and network while listening to some truly great speakers from around the nation.  Members from the Alaska Dietetic Association (AKDA) and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics came together to network and share on this momentous occasion. Dietitians were able to explore "New Horizons on the Old Frontier" first hand. Through influential speakers and presentations, Alaskan RDNs gained knowledge regarding CPT-1A Deficiency - The Arctic Variant and knowledge on oral health as it relates to nutrition. RDNs explored public policy perspectives in the state and were updated on current efforts to promote the profession through current legislation. A taste testing ensued as dairy was brought to the forefront of the Alaskan diet and we later worked out some sedentary stress through a Zumba exhibit. Speakers included: Diane Peck, MPH, RDN from the Alaska Food Policy Council, Mike DiFilippo, MS, RD, LD and AKDA Public Policy Coordinator, Martha Marino, MA, RDN, CD from the Washington Dairy Council, Matt Hirshfeld, MD/PhD from Alaska Native Medical Center, Christine Roalofs, DMD from Just Kids, Inc., and Kathy McClusky, MS, RDN, FAND from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.  The discussion and knowledge spurred from these speakers gave attendees the opportunity to explore the potential for nutrition on the new frontier and grow from the history of research in the state.
